Application Requirements

The Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at Albany Medical Center is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and meets all requirements of the American Board of Radiology (ABR).

Our program is a four-year training program preceded by a mandatory clinical preliminary or transitional year, or equivalent experience approved by the American Board of Radiology.

We are seeking applicants with competitive USMLE scores, a high level of clinical competence, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently, efficiently, and cooperatively with others. 

Fourth year medical students may apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for positions available in July following completion of PGY-1 clinical training, for which separate application is required.

Applicants who have already graduated from medical school should also apply through ERAS and NRMP.

International medical school graduates must be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Only J1 Visas are accepted.

Eligibility Requirements

Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

Candidates may be considered who are currently enrolled in foreign medical schools if they are eligible for the Restricted Interim Certificate from ECFMG, issued to students who have passed the Basic Science, Clinical Science and English examinations and are awaiting the issuance of their medical school diplomas. 

Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:

  • Have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates AND are graduates of schools approved by the New York State Department of Education OR have a full and unrestricted New York State license to practice medicine.

  • Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school

Graduates from schools outside of the United States are INELIGIBLE for residency training in New York State IF:

  • More than 12 weeks of clerkship training (during the 3rd and 4th years of medical school) occurred outside of the country in which the medical school is located UNLESS the New York State Education Department has approved that school's curriculum, as configured.

  • A list of those schools currently approved is available in the GME Department.

Also

For international medical graduates, ECFMG certification is required. 

Our institution accepts the J1 visa only.

Competitive USMLE Scores and three (3) letters of recommendation.

Completion of a PGY-1 preliminary/transitional year in an ACGME accredited program in the United States or equivalent experience approved by the American Board of Radiology (ABR).

Application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for PGY-2 positions available for July consideration must be submitted by December 31 of the previous year.

  • Tuition for the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) radiologic pathology course in Washington DC, and a $2000 housing allowance.  

  • Board review courses will be financially supported.  

  • Additional funding for resident travel to conferences to present findings of their original research.

  • 20 days vacation/sick time each year, not including time for the presentation of research, or the above-mentioned review courses.   

  • Internal moonlighting opportunities may be available for qualified residents at the appropriate academic levels.

  • Meal allowance for on-call service.  

  • Dedicated Radiology Library and learning resource center accessible to residents 24 hours per day.  Funds are allocated yearly for acquisition of new textbooks and materials for the Radiology Education Center.  

  • Albany Medical College Schaeffer Library with on-line full-text access to most major medical journals accessible from computers throughout the medical center.

Dear applicants,

Thank you for your interest in our Radiology Residency training program at Albany Medical Center.

The Albany Medical Center Department of Radiology offers a medium-size residency with a collegial, intellectually stimulating and friendly educational environment. You will work closely with our subspecialty attending radiologists dedicated to mentoring you through the radiology education process. With the large catchment area provided by the Albany Medical Center, there is a broad case mix from common pathology to rare disease. Residents learn by actively participating, which ultimately makes for a better radiologist. When it comes time to look for an attending or fellowship position, the intimate nature of this residency allows you to obtain personalized insight, guidance, and recommendations from members of our attending staff.

A high percentage of the residents have chosen to go on to subspecialty training in many of the nation’s most competitive institutions with careers in both academic medicine and private practice. We are proud of our training program and the residents we produce. We strive to provide a foundation for success.
